DAY 2, Saturday, October 6
Sunday morning I headed
into central Santa Cruz. My plan was to concentrate on the city for
the rest of weekend number one. The weather was perfect, and it was
a joy to wind through the neighborhoods that nestle along the Santa Cruz
waterfront.
I started with
the day with the richly colored, and cheerfully designed images of Teresa
Mallen.
James Carl Aschbacher creates detailed decorative
images combining playful human and animal figures with abstract designs
and calligraphic icons. His images are carefully crafted and meticulously
rendered.
Delving into the center
of town fortuitously brought me to the home and studio of Sally
Jörgensen. Sally creates highly detailed watercolor still life
images. Sally is also involved in the organization of the Open Studios
event.
Terry Brickley creates works in bronze, and highly textural abstract
paintings. Terry's work is sensual, rough, and dark, with an occasional
accent of vibrant color.
Carole
Depalma expresses herself in clay, creating emotive figures, both human
and fanciful. Her work has a personal quality that makes her pieces
appealing and mysterious, like ancient figures unearthed from a forgotten
civilization.
A golden autumnal light
lit the scene as I arrived at my final destination for the day to see the
work of Myra Dorn. Myra's paintings practically
leap from the canvas with their bold combination of intense color and form.
