Terry Brickley
"Emerging"
Terry Brickley is both an accomplished artist, and a dedicated activist.  Terry's commitment to the rights of the disabled has resulted in the integration of facilities for the handicapped into the public spaces and institutions of Santa Cruz, where he has lived since 1972.
Terry has had a long and varied career, and his life experiences are reflected in his art.  Terry's bronzes portray elements of the human form. Terry focuses on a foot, a shoulder, or a torso, and renders it in a way that accentuates both its details and its imperfections.  The result is expressive and sensual, similar in style to the work of Auguste Rodin.

Terry's paintings and mixed media constructions are highly textural, with thick layers of paint on surfaces distressed by heavy folds and wrinkles.  They are thoughtfully composed, and highly abstract.  Although glossy and rich in hue, his images have a dark side, portrayed by sombre color schemes, accented with ragged regions of vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges. One image gave me the impression it was layered over unearthed bones.
