Tom Killion
Santa Cruz, California
Snow Lake, Rock Island Pass, Yosemite
woodcut with seven blocks, 10x13
Tom has produced prints of the California landscape since the 1970s.  This delicate, multi-colored woodcut skillfully portrays the rugged granite outcroppings of the high Sierra.  Tom's use of rough but expressive calligraphic marks, and subtle fields of subdued color, is clearly influenced by the traditional techniques of Japanese printmakers. The portrayal of grand natural scenes is also a major theme of Japanese woodblock printing.  Tom's print successfully combines a well balanced composition, and a subtle pastel palette, into a boldly drawn, meditative, mountain landscape.  Tom also displays his works at the Santa Cruz Open Studios,  a three weekend art event held annually in Santa Cruz county.
