Suzie Ketchum
You take your chances, you roll the dice, you live, you love,
and some day your number is up! Suzie Ketchum creates highly detailed,
hand painted ceramics densely illustrated with iconic and abstract
designs. Images of skeletons, dice, hearts strung on barbed wire, floral
and abstract designs form a dense continuos mesh of imagery that covers
each piece. Like Mexican Folk Art, her images are playful and brightly
colored, with underlying themes that reference core issues of life and
death. Her palette relies on high contrast black and white elements,
with carefully place vibrant highlights in primary and secondary colors.
The overall effect is joyfully sensuous and humorously macabre. Suzie
buys unfired vessels from local sources, and concentrates on painting and
firing in an electric kiln. Her editions are small, and each piece
is in some way unique. Her glazes are boldly graphic and delightfully glossy,
adding to the overall playful feeling of the work. Over the last
ten Years Suzie has exhibited her work in California, Arizona, and Japan.
This representative piece was on display at the Art League Gallery.
